Buying a sofa is intimidating. Color, silhouette, and fabric choice can all drastically affect the end result of a room. Not to mention, it’s a serious investment. But Brigette Romanek, interior designer beloved by Beyoncé and Gwyneth Paltrow alike, offered us a word of advice while debuting her new collection with furniture brand Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams.

If you really want to make the best decision (one you’ll be happy with 15 years from now), Romanek insists you keep the preshopping research to a minimum. Other than knowing the size you need and a general color palette, go into stores with as open a mind as possible. “Sometimes you find the just-right sofa, and then that changes the rug or coffee table,” says Romanek. That means looking for your couch first can assist in the rest of the design process (and promises you don’t miss out on the perfect one just because it doesn’t match the side tables).

As a part of the collaboration, Romanek designed her dream sofa, and of course it’s as gorgeous-looking as it is great for napping. Inspired by the signature curves of Art Deco, the Lucy sofa has a singular seat cushion topped with two tubelike back supports (think of them as an elevated, way more comfortable answer to pool noodles). The piece comes with round throw pillows as well, which add a playful sense of sophistication. Also available in an armchair and daybed, the celebrity designer’s seating assortment will have you wanting to dramatically sprawl out when movie night rolls around.
