Eclectic, yet modern vibes are abound in Robin Strickler’s latest project, which infuses stunning marble accents and cool wallpaper details with a bright, neutral palette. The Newport beach home reflects the designer’s of-the-moment yet timeless approach to interiors, blended with her clients’ desire for a clean finish. To reflect the need of a family-friendly space, the DesignWorks team dreamed up an aesthetic complete with comfy finishes and textured designs. One that would remain sophisticated and withstand the test of time.
“Our client was looking for a cohesive design, with a mix of her eclectic furnishings with cleaner details,” says Strickler. “They definitely wanted something that was kid-friendly but sophisticated. We accomplished this by using more stain-resistant fabrics mixed with some iconic prints to bring in a coastal, bohemian theme.”
Greys, soft whites, and pops of navy blue accentuate the modern decor and custom accents. We’re in love with the marbleized look of the backsplash in the kitchen, along with the slate-blue oversized island that’s perfect for meal prep, eat-in breakfasts, or entertaining. The durable countertop makes for the perfect household gathering space.
“In the kitchen, we selected two different types of materials for the countertops to accentuate the colored cabinetry,” explains Stickler. “On the island we used Metropolis Grey, which is a quartzite that looks like limestone. On the perimeter, we used a new porcelain slab that was matched up the walls to really highlight the range and custom hood.”
The client’s existing pendants, from Thomas O’Brien, create a focal point above the massive island, and their brass detailing was the inspiration behind the hardware from Water Works, seen throughout the kitchen. In reference to her favorite room of the home, Strickler notes that “the mix of texture, color and brass brought a new but timeless feel.”
A large grey sectional in the living room provides ample seating for the family, while still looking stylish. The texture of the stain-resistant fabric contrasts nicely with the stark white walls. Plus, this room gets tons of natural light thanks to glass doors that open up to the home’s backyard, and it all flows back to the open kitchen.
The television blends in with the decor nicely by being featured in a built-in entertainment center adjacent to an updated fireplace. “We transformed the original fireplace into a clean, modern fireplace by adding whitewashed brick and a reclaimed mantel,” says Strickler.
Could stair-runners be making a comeback? We’re not sure, but this one definitely proves that carpeted staircases can make an exceptionally chic statement. Strickler explains that tackling the staircase was one of the first tasks she and her client tackled during the remodel. “We began this project redesigning the staircase, and my client had pinned her favorite Antelope wavy carpet. We felt that running that up the staircase also tied with the navy blue kitchen island.”
In the master bathroom, more marble accents give it a luxe, spa-like feel. The designer used a unique marble called Onda Perla for its “very distinctive pattern and was perfect the main shower wall.”
And that miniature-looking tub? It’s a Japanese soaking tub, something that’s become more popular in American design. The smaller tubs are deeper, and sometimes have a seat inside for maximum comfort. They’re typically designed for one to sit upright instead of lying down, and because they’re a bit smaller, they work well within various bathroom layouts. On this choice, Strickler says, “The Japanese soaking tub juxtaposed perfectly with the clean look we were going for.”
We’re also loving the subtle use of wallpaper in this nook of the dining area. The marble pattern mimics the gray marble seen in both the kitchen and bathroom and gives this inlet depth, and highlights the cool, modern sideboard.
Now that’s how you give minimalism a burst of character.
