Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

We’ll be the first to admit that shopping for a waterproof mattress protector isn’t the most glamorous task—but after finding the bed of your dreams, let’s just say it’s a must. Think of it as insurance against kids bopping about with sippy cups, puppy drool, or cozying up to a full cup of coffee still in your robe—a spill is inevitable. Sure, sheets can be washed, but once a mattress is saturated and soiled, it’s hard to get a stain out. According to bedding brand Coop Home Goods, moisture is a mattress’s number-one enemy, so even if you’re not accident-prone, child-free, or have no pets, there’s still humidity, perspiration, and mildew to factor in. The best waterproof mattress protectors, handpicked by Domino editors, prioritize brands we love, high-quality materials, and effectiveness—so go on, have that second mimosa in bed.

How We Chose These Products

Mattress protectors, as we previously noted, are not the accessory most people are psyched to dive into—but a good night’s sleep is worth the time investment. Because once you decide on the ideal mattress, it’s time to wrap it up. At Domino, we strive to prioritize bedding brands that balance style, high-quality manufacturing, and eco-conscious attributes. Our editors and writers conduct hands-on testing when possible, and we tap industry experts for their input, dig into brand stats, and conduct independent research. When it comes to the best waterproof mattress protectors, materials, customer reviews, warranties, and comfort level topped our list of features to consider. We also tapped Logan Foley, sleep science coach and managing editor at SleepFoundation.org, for intel.

Our Shopping Checklist

Material

Materials vary across waterproof mattress protectors, so it’s important to read labels just as you would for clothing. Depending on your preference, there’s a fabric for that. One commonality: polyurethane. While synthetic, this material adds to waterproof ability. While some products, like Avocado’s, use organic cotton, many protectors use Tencel (a plant-based material derived from eucalyptus) for its naturally cooling effect. Others on our list use rayon or polyester.

Waterproofing

A waterproof mattress protector goes above and beyond normal mattress protection. It involves a waterproof material, often polyurethane, which acts as a moisture barrier between the bed and a person. Waterproofing has, historically, created a crunchy-sounding element related to the synthetic materials used—this aspect of construction is something brands today continue to refine and focus on minimizing.

Care

Most mattress protectors can be easily removed and tossed in a washer and dryer for laundering. This helps to deeply clean and dry while removing bacteria and allergens from the fabric. It’s recommended to wash a protector every two months, unless a big spill occurs—then wash accordingly.

Ask Domino

Q: Do you need a mattress protector if the mattress is waterproof?

While a waterproof mattress may fight against water damage, a mattress protector is essential when it comes to avoiding other stains and damage, says Foley. Be sure to study up on both your mattress and the protector. “Many mattress warranty or trial policies require the use of a mattress protector in order to avoid damage,” he adds.

Q: Can you use a sheet as a mattress protector?

A sheet’s purpose is to keep you covered and temperature regulated, but it does not offer the same benefits as a protector. Nowadays there are many different protectors based on a person’s sleep preference and general needs. “A big difference between sheets and a mattress protector is the waterproof element of a mattress protector,” Foley notes. “This feature helps prevent issues like mold or mildew,” he adds, exactly what you want to keep away from a mattress.

Q: What is the difference between a mattress protector and a mattress cover?

A mattress cover or topper doesn’t offer full protection and slides on only the top part of the mattress. Sure, it might prevent a spill from sinking through, but in the long run it won’t protect against mildew and everyday wear and tear. “Essentially every mattress protector is designed with waterproof capabilities.” Foley says. “Mattress protectors are also easily removed and washed, shielding the bed from allergens, dirt, and damage while also making it easier to maintain a clean and fresh sleep surface.”

The Last Word

While mattress protectors may seem like an afterthought, we prefer to think of them as an easy trick to prolonging the life of your mattress—say, an anti-aging serum but for your bed. If you’re still torn and not sure where to start, the Casper Waterproof Mattress Protector is a no-brainer, but we’re also here for the Coop Ultra Luxe Waterproof Mattress Protector, which comes in at even less.
