Shower curtains are a renter’s best friend: they’re low-cost, high impact, and perhaps most importantly, they are landlord-approved. Sure, you may not be able to tile the floor or replace a dated medicine cabinet, but the right curtain works wonders to inject color and personality (and hide those cracked tiles from the last tenant).

We’ve found a style for every design personality. Think: playful gingham in cinnamon and turmeric for those who want to bring a hint of cottagecore nostalgia into their bathroom or a classic white option with tassels for traditionalists who don’t take themselves too seriously. From soothing gradients to graphic prints and punchy florals, here are the best shower curtains to instantly upgrade your bathroom.

A Few Things to Keep in Mind

Curtain Material: There are two main options: fabric made from natural fibers (such as cotton, hemp, silk, or canvas) and synthetic weaves (including polyester and vinyl). We prefer products made from Global Organic Textile Standard-certified cotton (GOTS), since they’re processed with non-toxic chemicals and meet social sustainability standards for workers. However, polyester varieties tend to be most popular because they’re easy to clean and can be more affordable.

Size: The standard size for shower curtains is typically 72 inches x 72 inches, however some designs may run a bit wider (up to 79 inches) for larger spaces.

Lining: Shower curtains typically do not come with a liner and must be purchased separately. A thick, durable vinyl liner is a popular option since it’s easy to spray clean with disinfectant and won’t get waterlogged. But there are also linen and cotton liners available that can easily be thrown in the wash machine and left to hang dry. They do, however, require a bit more up-keep since they tend to attract mold and mildew.

Our Top Picks

Best Graphics: Quiet Town Arco Phlox

Shower Curtain, Arco Phlox ($198)
Quiet Town’s signature geometric forms add a playful pop to any stock-standard white bathroom. The Arco Phlox features bold semicircles in terracotta and rose (reminiscent of a hazy beach sunset) with a deep ocean blue stripe. It’s also made from 100% USA-grown, milled, and dyed 10-ounce cotton canvas and constructed in a GOTS-certified Brooklyn factory using a double-needle stitch for durability. Every detail from this eco-conscious, husband-and-wife design team (including the interior seams with cotton binding and Turkish brass grommets) are well thought out.

Best Ombre: Hay Aquarelle Shower Curtain

Aquarelle Shower Curtain, HAY ($34)
With its subtle color gradient in ice blue or eucalyptus shades, Hay’s Aquarelle Shower Curtain blends soothing shades for spa-like vibes. Hay is a Domino editor-favorite (we’re currently eyeing their latest collab with Belgian duo Muller Van Severen) and this design is no exception. While we love the thin, semi-sheer material that drapes nicely, it’s worth noting that this option is made from polyester, which generates microparticles when washed. It’s non-recyclable, so consider this a long-term purchase.

Best Gingham: Heather Taylor Home Gingham Curtain

Home Gingham Curtain,Heather Taylor, West Elm ($60)
Heather Taylor Home’s gingham designs hit just the right note—They’re trend-forward rather than twee. The brand’s latest collaboration with West Elm includes this playful shower curtain made from GOTS-certified organic cotton in blue, marigold, and nutmeg, as well as a matching bath mat and towels. Best Floral: Schoolhouse Blooming Field Shower Curtain

Blooming Field Shower Curtain, Schoolhouse ($78)
Schoolhouse does florals right: Think springtime meadow vibes, rather than your grandma’s tablecloth. Featuring creamy, ochre poppies set against a deep green color palette, the Blooming Field Shower Curtain pairs well with a classic white subway tile bathroom or traditional washroom. Constructed from percale cotton from Portugal with sewn-in buttonhole eyelets (that fit most types of hardware), this signature design also comes in a sham and duvet cover, should you want to extend the theme beyond the tub.

Best Waffle: Hawkins New York Simple Waffle Shower Curtain

Simple Waffle Shower Curtain, Hawkins New York ($150)
Tested and loved by Team Domino, this Hawkins New York shower curtain ticks all of our boxes: It’s made from soft, stonewashed cotton sourced from Portugal, is quick drying, and comes in an extensive color palette. Choose from 12 muted shades like peacock, blush, sage, and mustard, and go all-out with coordinating towels, robes, and slippers. Go on, you deserve it.

Best Stripe: Hall & Perry Tassel Shower Curtain

Tassel Shower Curtain, Hall & Perry ($30)
Set at an affordable price point, the Hall & Perry Tassel Shower Curtain features a timeless stripe design in charcoal, tan, classic black, and blush pink. While the curtain is machine washable, the cotton fabric is a bit thin and may be prone to snagging, so it needs to be ironed after washing. You can “dress up” the curtain even more with the right shower hooks, too (aka the earrings of the bathroom).

Best 70s-Inspired: Kierkegaard Design Studio Liquid Swirl Shower Curtain

Liquid Swirl Shower Curtain, Kierkegaard Design Studio ($46)

We’re particularly taken with this psychedelic ‘70s-inspired option by Kierkegaard Design Studio. Best Tassel: Serena & Lily French Tassel Shower Curtain

French Tassel Shower Curtain, Serena & Lily ($78)
Serena & Lily is known and trusted for its impeccable craftsmanship and this cotton canvas shower curtain lives up to the brand’s reputation. The dainty tassel detail is the best quality we found on the market; the material is weighted so it stays flush, and comes in navy, white, smoke, and french blue color options.

Best Liner: LiBa Bathroom Shower Curtain Liner

Bathroom Shower Curtain Liner, LiBa ($12)
Never underestimate the power of a decent shower liner. This LiBa Bathroom Shower Curtain Liner is not only one of the most affordable options available, but it also has rave reviews by over 100,000 shoppers. Available in four finishes, including frosted clear and white, this bestseller is made from durable vinyl––so if you clean it properly, it should last several years.

Ask Domino

Q: Are all shower curtains machine washable?

Nearly all shower curtains (even plastic or polyester varieties) are machine washable or can be hand-washed with either regular detergent or a natural cleaner made from baking soda and white vinegar. Hang dry to reduce shrinkage and lightly iron or steam the fabric to reduce any wrinkles. Of course, as with any new fabric, be sure to check the specific recommended care from the manufacturer.

Q: Do you always need a shower curtain liner?

Yes! While polyester and vinyl curtains are waterproof, a liner helps protect the fabric and keep your bathroom floor dry.

Q: How often should I replace my shower curtains?

If you use a shower liner and regularly spray it down with bleach or a disinfectant of your choice to fight mold and mildew, your shower curtain should last several years. However you should probably throw it in the wash every couple months since the bathroom is one of the most bacteria-ridden places in the home.
