Reading up on Domino’s shopping guides is like having your own personal product concierge. We do the tedious part—deep-dive research, hands-on testing, and tapping experts for advice—so all you have to do is hit “add to cart.” That’s why we call them Simply the Best.

Think about your favorite hotel stay—after a long flight and a day spent romping around a new city, we bet the first thing that comes to mind about the room isn’t the view from your window, the cool wallpaper pattern, or the trendy bouclé armchair. It’s jumping into that perfectly comfortable hotel bed.

But what makes a hotel bed so great, and sometimes even better than your own, anyway? It all starts with the mattress, according to designer Natalia Miyar. “Selecting a mattress for use at a hotel can be a tricky business,” she says, which is why she turns to trusted brands offering high-quality materials—those you can count on holding up for a long time. We asked hoteliers and designers about the best queen mattresses they use in their projects, so you can bring that coveted comfort home.

Sleep trial: 365 nights | Mattress type: Hybrid | Warranty: 1 year (pay extra to add on 3, 5, or 10 years)

What we like:

  • Lifetime renewal exchange
  • Inner foam layer can be swapped
  • Choose between 3 firmness levels

Worth noting:

  • Reviewers say it’s a bit bouncy
  • Can take a while to ship

Why we chose it: Multiple levels of support, all in one mattress.

If you’re not totally sure what firmness level you need for a hotel-quality sleep at home, Nest will allow you to experiment. With the brand’s Sparrow Signature Hybrid offering—a high-quality, durable, CertiPUR-US-certified mattress—you can switch out the top layer of foam for three different feels (medium, plush, or firm). Or if neither you nor your partner is sure what an ideal bed feels like, opt for the dual split option (available in king and California king sizes only). Either way, you have up to an entire year to figure out your preferences, during which you can alternate between each of the responsive foam layers, free of charge, without having to buy a brand-new bed.

Best for Minimal Motion Transfer: Tuft & Needle Legacy Original Mattress

Legacy Original Mattress, Tuft & Needle ($671 was $955)

Sleep trial: 100 nights | Mattress type: Memory foam | Warranty: 10-year limited

What we like:

  • Greenguard Gold certified
  • Graphite-infused layer for cooling

Worth noting:

  • May take up to 2 weeks to air out
  • Only water-based cleaners recommended for spot treatment

Why we chose it: Firmness that prevents middle-of-the-night movement—no interrupted shut-eye.

We’ve compared the Tuft & Needle Legacy Original Mattress to sleeping on a cloud. However, it’s not too soft, combining a cushy feel with support and motion control. Its responsive foam blend is designed to contour to the body while the base layer prevents sinking, allowing the mattress to immediately bounce back to its original shape after you’ve left that cozy spot. And if your partner or pets want to join after you’ve gotten comfy, the adaptive foam layer works with the base layer to ensure minimal motion control; customers, like the following, say that they rarely notice other movements. “My wife and I are on year eight of owning our T&N king,” writes one 5-star reviewer, adding that they “also have a dog and a cat that regularly sneak onto the bed.” And edge sleepers should note that the firmness is consistent throughout the mattress, giving you support no matter where you position yourself.

Best for a Cooling Hybrid: Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress

Bear Elite Hybrid Queen Mattress

Sleep trial: 120 nights | Mattress type: Hybrid | Warranty: Lifetime

What we like:

  • Free delivery and returns
  • Supreme edge support
  • Greenguard and CertiPUR-US certified
  • Made in the U.S.

Worth noting:

  • On the firmer side

Why we chose it: A cushiony pillow top encases supportive coils and cooling layers of foam.

While everyone’s preferences when it comes to comfort is personal, designer Kate Rohrer of Rohe Creative keeps a few things in mind when selecting a hotel bed for perfect sleep. The most important thing in her book: The bed has to have coils. “I just can’t get behind the memory foam trend,” she admits. “Some mattress brands have perfected great hybrid versions that combine the best of coils and high-density foam for durability.” One such option? The Bear Elite hybrid. She was blown away by its comfort (and targeted lumbar support). Pillow toppers are also a must for Rohrer (for that extra-plush cush!), and the Bear delivers with its hand-quilted option complete with celliant fiber to promote cool, restorative z’s. “I think most guests enjoy an extra-cool sleep, so look for integrations like copper foam and celliant fiber that do the work for you,” she adds.

Best for Luxurious Support: Simmons Beautyrest Black Mattress

Simons
Black Mattress, Simmons Beautyrest ($2,399 was $2,699)
Shop

Sleep trial: 100 nights | Mattress type: Hybrid | Warranty: 10 years

What we like:

  • Cooling, gel-infused foam
  • Antimicrobial
  • Choose between a medium or plush pillow top
  • Keeps motion transfer to a minimum

Worth noting:

  • Not budget-friendly

Why we chose it: Supportive enough for stomach and back sleepers, and a plush, quilted top keeps it soft enough for side sleepers.

Sereno Hotels in Lake Como, Italy, and St. Barths lean on Beautyrest’s premium Black collection. And of all the different options available (C-Class, K-Class, L-Class, etc.), you can’t really go wrong with any pick for one of the best queen mattresses; each offers tailor-made support. “Hoteliers should never forget that at the most basic level, we are giving our guests a comfortable bed to sleep in,” stresses Luis Contreras, Sereno’s owner, who worked with Patricia Urquiola on the design of the properties. “So first and foremost, we select these mattresses with comfort top of mind.”

Best for a Soft Splurge: Naturalmat Natural Fiber Cashmere Mattress

Simply the Best photo
Natural Fiber Cashmere Mattress, Naturalmat ($4,071)

Sleep trial: 45 nights  | Mattress type: Foam | Warranty: Lifetime

What we like:

  • Organic
  • Locally sourced materials
  • Wool and cotton herringbone cover
  • Greatest range of sizes (including a made-to-measure option)

Worth noting:

  • Short sleep trial
  • Made and ships from the U.K. (you’ll need to submit a shipping request, which will cost you)

Why we chose it: The same bed you’ll find at Hoxton Hotels.

“For both homes and hotels, I prefer thick and fluffy mattresses that make you feel like you are sleeping on a cloud,” notes Miyar, who often turns to Naturalmat for only using natural fibers. “Its mattresses are made in Devon, England, from locally sourced wool. As an added luxury, it uses cashmere, lambswool, and mohair to provide a truly heavenly sleep.” And while you may think these sorts of materials would warrant a warm sleep, they’re all actually inherently self-ventilating, and cashmere is by far the softest—just like your favorite sweater. The construction formula, according to the company, starts with a thin layer of coir, which is a fibrous material derived from coconuts (this, according to Naturalmat, is what gives the mattress a springy, strong core), that’s sandwiched between two extra-thick layers of natural latex, which is then topped off with a blend of cashmere and lambswool. How fast can you say “sweet dreams”?

Best for Contouring Foam: Corsicana Renue Copper Foam Mattress

Corsicana
Copper Foam Mattress, Corsicana Renue ($1,939)
Shop

Sleep trial: 180 nights | Mattress type: Memory foam | Warranty: 10 years

What we like:

  • Ships fast
  • Medium-firm foam
  • Delivered as a mattress-in-a-box
  • Reasonable price point

Worth noting:

  • Not flippable (voids warranty)
  • Lacks edge support

Why we chose it: Copper keeps night sweats at bay, while also preventing the growth of bacteria.

The single most important asset of a hotel, argues hotelier Damon Lawrence, the creator behind Stay Homage, is comfort. His favorite that fits the bill? The Corsicana Renue copper foam mattress. At a neutral, medium-firm feel, this bed is distinguishable by its copper and gel-infused layers of foam that not only keep your body temperature regulated but provide cushioned support. Its 12-inch height is made up of four total layers of foam including a firm, high-density one for base support. Complete with a custom-milled, zippered top, the cover is removable for easy cleaning. Foam is often a great pick if motion transfer is a concern, since the material absorbs any disturbances. A good fit for all sleepers, this mattress is also compatible with a range of frames, including adjustable bases.

Other Hotel Beds to Envy (and Bring Home)

  • If you’ve ever stayed at an Ace Hotel, you can buy the exact latex mattress (100% natural rubber) it outfits its rooms with, in collaboration with Suite Sleep.
  • Bring the Four Seasons home with its exclusive signature mattress made by Simmons, featuring a patented gel-infused layer so you’ll never wake up shivering or sweating.
  • The 13.25-inch, 850-pocket-coil mattress exclusive to Westin made an appearance on our list of the best innerspring mattresses, which isn’t surprising, considering it’s one of the main reasons overnight guests continue to frequent the hotel chain again and again.

How We Chose These Products

Let’s face it: The world of bedding is super-saturated and overwhelming—but sometimes you need a new mattress (or pillows or sheets). At Domino, we strive to prioritize bedding brands that balance style, high-quality manufacturing, and eco-conscious attributes. Our editors and writers conduct hands-on testing when possible, but to find the best queen mattresses, we went to the experts—hoteliers and hospitality designers who know that a hotel room just isn’t complete without a versatile bed. Our list is based on their recommendations—products and brands they turn to when sourcing or testing for their own projects, keeping in mind that they have to suit a range of sleeping preferences (your houseguests will thank you).

Our Shopping Checklist

Size and Dimensions

A queen is bigger than a twin and a full, but smaller than a king mattress, making it one of the most popular bed sizes available, as it still allows enough comfortable room for (most) couples and even more if you’re sleeping solo. Dimensions are typically 60-by-80 inches, and while this can vary slightly by manufacturer, you shouldn’t have any issues pairing up one of the best queen mattresses with a bed frame the same size. The number that’s more important is the height of your mattress, which can vary widely. If you happen to go with something tall, say above 10 or 12 inches, you’re likely going to need queen-size, deep-pocket sheets

Mattress Types and Materials

There are a number of mattress types out there, but there are three we find to be most common. Innerspring mattresses are the most traditional and affordable and known for their bounce factor (great for stomach sleepers who need extra support). Today’s modern memory foam mattresses also offer a host of benefits, including the ability to be shipped in a box. Some designs are infused with gel (to help regulate body temperature while offering ergonomic support) or offer open-cell structures for added breathability, and usually include multiple layers in different densities to avoid that quicksand feel. And last but not least, hybrid mattresses are a sandwich of springs and foam, offering the best of both worlds, including coils that promote better airflow. We almost always prefer natural materials, so if you want to avoid memory foam, there’s latex, which is derived from rubber trees and can outlast all of these materials in terms of durability. It’s supportive and cushy, but also one of the best cooling mattresses you can get.

For these picks, we’ve done the research, but generally always read up on material details before you “add to cart.” “Mattress branding and technology, unfortunately, tends to be confusing,” reveals Contreras. “Manufacturers license the brands and technology, and the quality of the mattress varies with geographic location and time even when the brand stays the same. It is important to look at the technical specifications (gauge, spring count, density, etc.) and, of course, to test it when you can.”

Firmness Levels

More often than not, you can attribute the comfort of your mattress to its firmness level, typically defined as either soft, medium, or firm. But it’s all a bit subjective based on preference. In general, if you’re a side sleeper, you’ll likely prefer a softer, cushiony feel. Back sleepers and stomach sleepers tend to skew firmer; a back sleeper often enjoys a more neutral, medium-firm mattress, and stomach sleepers are often instructed to go for firm.

Ask Domino

Q: How long does a mattress last, and how do I know it needs replacing?

A quality mattress will likely last about a decade, though this number varies depending on a variety of factors, mainly the type you choose. In other words, foam and spring mattresses should support you for that 10-year period, whereas gel foam won’t (it’s more like eight years), and you may be able to squeeze a couple more years out of hybrids. If longevity is really what you’re after, latex is the cream of the crop (or should we say rubber tree?), as it can last anywhere between 12 and 20 years.

As Naturepedic founder Barry Cik previously told us about how long a mattress can last, there are few warning signs that indicate your mattress is nearing the end of its life, most notably if you suddenly can’t get comfortable anymore or are waking up with a stiff neck or sore back. Sagging is also a pretty sizable warning; if there are any spots in your mattress that are refusing to return to their original shape, it’s time to kick-start your shopping journey.

Q: I got the hotel mattress; now how can I make my bedroom look as luxe as a hotel room?

Accessorize. Whether it’s stacking pillows up high or pairing an extra-fluffy comforter with a lightweight coverlet or quilt. Stick to crisp white sheets, made from cotton (percale, sateen, etc.), though linen isn’t a bad choice either. Five-star sleep is a combination of a great mattress and the best pillows, though most hotels source a combination of down and feather: The Four Seasons, for instance, uses a blend of 25% down and 75% feather, as designers previously revealed to us when we asked them about hotel bedding secrets

Q: What pillow size works best for a queen mattress?

While there are some elusive queen-specific-size pillows out there, this mattress size is pretty versatile; standard pillows fit perfectly, but you can sneak king-size pillows on there too if you want a fuller look.

The Last Word

Putting together a list of the best queen mattresses is daunting, especially when experts have told us time and time again that there is no universal indicator of a comfortable bed. This is one of the most popular sizes you can buy—not too big, not too small—and it isn’t as much of a chore to move or set up, but you don’t have to spend hundreds a night to enjoy one.
