We don’t have to tell you that fall has finally arrived. After a long and sweltering summer, to say that we’ve been patiently awaiting this day would be an understatement. Among the many autumnal-inspired activities we’re looking forward to (like sipping spiced cider, taking long strolls through pumpkin-filled patches, and clearing out Trader Joe’s seasonally stocked shelves), peppering our homes with warm textiles, sumptuous accents, and other sweater weather objects is easily our favorite fall pastime.

Need to brush up on your nesting skills? Never fear. Ahead, our editors share the essential home and decor items they swear by once the temperatures drop. Consider these cool and cozy finds the bare necessities.

Artful Lighting

“My essential fall decor pick for the season is moody lighting. As the season is transitioning to a little less sunlight and cooler temps, creating a cozy home environment is top of mind. I am especially enamored by these sculptural handmade lamps by Mixed Needs based in Portland, Oregon.” – Lahaina Alcantara, Digital Photo Editor

A Very Big Blanket

“This sounds basic (because it kind of is), but I love treating myself to a new throw every fall. After a crazy summer of traveling and hectic schedules, I love cozying up on my sofa, binge-watching all the new fall TV, and laying low. Calhoun & Co has the best cheeky throws—you’ve definitely seen their “Good at Naps” design. They added this cute “Very Big Hug” design this year and it’s my favorite new fall find.” – Alyssa Clough, Social Media Editor

Cool Copper Accents

“I live through each season by color and come fall, I’m all about moody, earthy tones. My apartment is almost exclusively whitewashed, which makes swapping out these subtle tonal details so easy. Even the most understated elements can make a big difference. I’ll be bringing out these copper trays from Hawkins New York for my coffee table—they’re perfect for corralling little trinkets, coasters, and candles. Plus, the color contrast is way too good to pass up on.”– Anna Kocharian, Digital Editor

Blush Bedding

“Given the fact that my landlord doesn’t turn on the heat in my building until mid-November, there’s a very real chance that I would freeze to death without my duvet. I have a basic Ikea down comforter—they have a range of inserts at varying degrees of warmth, according to what kind of sleeper you are. But the real star is my linen bedding set, which I got from Parachute in a blush pink color. I love linen as a material year round (it’s somehow both crisp and cozy), and the subtle hue is the perfect way to elevate something as basic as a comforter cover and make it feel a little more interesting.” – Elly Leavitt, Associate Digital Editor

A Candle With a Story

“While burning a candle year round is great, it feels darn right autumnal to light up a candle come fall. (I’ve previously had a lot to say about candles… and I hold to all my strong thoughts). Basically, I like candles with a POV, an opinion, or a true uniqueness. I want my candles to be weird or historical or packing a scent punch. And Cire Trudon’s Marie Antoinette Bust ($125) is all of those things rolled into one—historical (uhh, yeah, it is literally from a copy of a royal bust from the Réunion des Musées Nationaux), and weird (while these busts are more of a visual POV, you can light it and watch her literally melt, but in the most romantic way), and packing a punch—visually and scent wise. Not only is it great for just a rainy fall day at home, it’s also an incredible showpiece for your next dinner party, maybe bring it over when dessert is served, and… Let them eat cake!”– Kristin Limoges, Beauty Editor

Shaggy Rugs

“When I’m not huddled deep under my comforter, you can bet I’m spending all my time outside on the weekend once autumn is in full swing. To get from point A (my bed) to point B (my door), I need an extra-plush landing pad to sink my feet into. This shaggy, mustard and red rug looks like it was made for keeping toes warm.” – Lydia Geisel, Contributing Writer
