This NYC Coworking Space Has a Meditation Room

New York is rife with coworking spaces, but if wellness is your passion, the Assemblage needs to be on your radar. The new coworking and social event space was crafted to be a place where everyone from real estate investors and entrepreneurs to lifestyle coaches and nascent nonprofits would feel at home. But what makes the Assemblage stand out from other coworking offices is the way these professionals and wellness enthusiasts have built a community—in fact, the entire operation was crowdfunded by the members.

People from more than 27 countries provided the initial $150 million of funding that will allow the Assemblage to open three outposts in New York, the first of which is now open in Manhattan’s Nomad neighborhood. And naturally, the spirit of interconnectedness is reflected in the building’s design, created by Meyer Davis design studio. Wellness and connection permeate all aspects of the design, from the abundance of greenery to a thoughtful floor plan that encourages workplace productivity and meditation.

Memberships are offered through a tiered program, starting at $200 per month for access to the lounge and social spaces on evenings and weekends (the Assembly tier). At the House level, $900 per month will rent space in the open seating areas. A dedicated desk (the Resident Desk tier) costs $1,600 per month and comes with access to the private phone booths. A private office or lounge runs $6,500 per month.

All memberships except for the lowest tier include complimentary lunch and breakfast. On the way we visited, we enjoyed an Ayurvedic lunch of roasted Brussels sprouts, spicy kale, carrot hummus, miso soup, and polenta cakes and sipped on fair-trade coffee and chamomile tea. The dining area features wall art collected from South America and layered colorful Moroccan rugs. The open seating encourages casual conversation between staff, members, and those touring the space.

The mezzanine level is decorated with low-slung sofas and tables, perfect for a quick brainstorm session or strategy meeting. A glass wall separates meeting space from a luxe meditation room, equipped with throw pillows, floor poufs, blankets, and even gongs for sound baths. Frequent meditation classes are offered and members are encouraged to indulge in their personal practice.

The meditation room serves as a relaxing retreat for members to use between workday meetings, and it’s used by the Assemblage for after-hours events. From meditation to mindfulness, to ecstatic dance and business development, the space brings compassionate entrepreneurs together in radically different ways.

The office spaces are unfussy and sophisticated, and punctuated with the same calming elements found throughout the space. Wall art and greenery (hello, tiny succulent) are constant design motifs. Movable doors can be manipulated and removed to accommodate growing teams. Above, a conference room with a sofa and two armchairs is the perfect space for a client meeting, private life coaching session, or team huddle.

Each coworking floor comes with a rentable conference room or meditation room. If you’re a team of one (or two), The Assemblage offers desks that can be purchased as a quarterly commitment. Every floor comes with fair trade Columbian-roasted coffee and tea. If lattes are your thing, pop down to the ground floor for a pick-me-up made with your milk of choice.

On the top floor, you’ll find the Assemblage’s plant-based, non-alcoholic bar where members can sip on hand-crafted elixirs designed to enhance personal health, such as energy, openness, or clarity. Sip on drinks that give you the sort of buzz that could carry you to yoga class or an enlightening speaker series after a busy workday.

This floor is also home to possible the most relaxing conference room in Manhattan. A sunny, plant-filled space with slate floors and seating for at least 20, it’s the perfect place for team huddles, board meetings, and client presentations.

In 2018, the Assemblage plans to open two additional locations in Manhattan’s Financial District and Midtown East neighborhoods.
