The seashell-shaped Casa Caracol, designed by Raquel and Eduardo Ocampo and located on Mexico’s Isla Mujeres (not far from Cancun), happens to be one of the most wish-listed properties on the vacation rental site. Its intricate details, which include built-in shell-shaped beds and barnacle-filled bathrooms, are nothing short of magical. Why settle for a standard structure when you can pretend you’re vacationing in the lost city of Atlantis?

It’s not just this out-of-this-world dwelling that stands out amid the thousands of listings. A few other architectural marvels can be found on the site’s record of the decade’s 10 most coveted homes. Hector Cave House, in Santorini, is a white stone dream that used to function as a wine cellar (its tall ceilings now serve to make the living space feel open and airy). Another beach property in Brazil was built partially on stilts, granting its bedrooms a semi-bird’s-eye view of the ocean below.

When you travel far and wide to sleep in the coolest places possible, it’s perfectly acceptable to not leave the house during your entire trip. Consider this your excuse for a different kind of staycation.
