Matisse Would Be Thrilled That Abstract Shapes Are (Still) Trending

This year would have been Henri Matisse’s 150th birthday, and yet his abstract cutout shapes feel as fresh as ever.
In fact, we’re calling it: Abstract shapes are set to be one of the biggest trends this year. The proof has been mounting for a while, perhaps beginning officially with an Etsy trend report that placed the style at the top of its predictions for 2019. Retailers like Anthropologie heavily featured abstract prints in their spring collections; at this year’s Kips Bay Show House, the standout (and most-Instagrammed) moment was a gorgeous abstract Fromental wallpaper in designer Young Huh’s room.
Launched in late 2017, lifestyle and homeware brand Viso was an early adopter of the abstract print revival. Founders David Vivrido and Francesco Sourigues count numerous artistic and design references as their inspiration—though perhaps none is more evident than Matisse. “We like to consider ourselves eclectic and fun; our roots are inspired by the worlds of art and design, [where] anything is possible,” they say. “For sure, the Matisse world has always been an inspiration to us.”
From blankets and pillows with a medley of colors and shapes emblazoned on the front to the playful porcelain Kamo Sutra series (a tongue-in-cheek take on Grandma’s china collection), Viso is putting the art of the abstract at the forefront. There are plenty of ways to bring this funky—and seemingly timeless—trend home. Ahead, some of our favorites.
