An elliptical machine here, a sad little exercise mat there… the features of a regular gym are hardly exciting. Which is fine, given that the purpose of a gym is strictly utilitarian, but why can’t function and design coexist? A new fitness studio located in NYC’s Upper East Side is proving they can. 305 Fitness’s latest location is all about vibrant ’80s style.

The 6,000-square-foot space was formerly a thrift shop. Designer Sasha Bikoff was brought on to completely turn the space around, transforming it into what she describes as Miami Vice–meets–Memphis Milano.

“305 Fitness is a dance workout that’s inspired by Miami nightlife culture,” explains Bikoff. “When you work out in the studio, there are strobe lights and a live DJ playing all the current hits.” It only makes sense that the design is just as lively as the studio.

Inspired by Miami Vice, Miami’s Ocean Drive landmark buildings, Art Deco, and the ’80s aerobics culture we all know and love, Bikoff set about crafting a wildly colorful space full of cool graphics and retro accents. The studio turns a traditional exercise environment on its head, and we’re here for it. Pink glitter patent leather seating is hardly your average gym accessory, but it definitely makes working out feel like less of a chore, right?

“For me, and I think for lots of people, it’s still hard to find the energy and make time in our busy lives to exercise. For this reason, I wanted to further inspire and encourage people through a bold, colorful, and fun party design that would keep people coming back,” says Bikoff. “The workout makes you feel good, so the space should make you feel the same way.”

A saturated palette of yellow, turquoise, green, and pink infuses every corner with energy. From a citron-tiled bathroom (Bikoff’s favorite room, which she says feels like a “cool art installation”) to custom wallpaper Bikoff designed to emulate Tom Wesselmann’s art, there’s cool detailing everywhere you look.

While looking to the past to ground the overarching style, Bikoff also pulled in some of the more prevalent trends of today. “Terrazzo is a huge trend right now and something I’ve always admired,” she says, referencing the black-and-white print taking over the studio’s floors and front desk. “Millennial pink is here to stay, so of course we did a pink lounge complete with a disco ball and leather banquette seating. Colorful tiled bathrooms are also becoming a trend—people want bathrooms that are more fun, and color is a great way to pack a punch in a small space.”

If you find yourself in the Upper East Side and want to beat Seasonal Affective Disorder while sticking to your New Year’s resolution, the new 305 Fitness studio is definitely worth a visit.
